MUM ON MUMBAI.
I have not posted a single entry on the devastation of just over a week ago, in India. It now appears that Pakistan is indeed involved, and this may mean even more heightened tension between these two neighbors(is that even possible? It's already been tense, for so very long).
I'm going to focus on a different loss, today. Odetta, the wonderful "folk" singer of the many decades of social change, upheaval, and resolve(the 1950's, 60's, and 70's)has died(Wednesday), at age 77. Bob Dylan has said she was THE reason became the kind of singer he became. She influenced every folk-singer of the 1960's. I remember reading recently that Odetta wanted very much to sing at President-Elect Barack Obama's inauguration. Sit and listen to this soulful rendering, and her thoughts on "phrasing", courtesy NPR.(NPR did an interview in 2006, with the then-75-year-old Odetta).Click here
and then scroll down on that link's page,(on your left), to Odetta Sings A Spiritual And Explains Her Phrasing.

Peace, kids.

Pakistan and India. Palestine and Israel. The U.S. and Mexico. It seems neighborly love is just a dream some of us had...
