There is a new program for women and children who are fleeing domestic violence, and I think it's the most important campaign that American Humane Association has ever launched. It will allow for the companion animals of these mothers and children to accompany them as they leave, and begin to make a new life for themselves. Imagine the peace-of-mind they will be able to have, knowing their ENTIRE beloved family is with them.
No more worries like: "If I leave, what will happen to...? Will he hurt or kill our [dog/cat].....?"
The website is below, and the program is called PAWS.
Please log on now, and add this info to your social networking site, like Facebook, or MySpace, and/or add it to your own blog.
Let's be sure women do not feel forced to stay any longer in a frightening, abusive relationship, because they are afraid of the rage their animals will suffer. They can be helped to leave--with their children, their beloved companion animals, and their dignity--in tact. Help them do just that!

In other news, I am painfully aware of Canada's Annual Seal Slaughter coming up. I say "slaughter", because there's no "hunting" aspect to this. The baby seals are easily spotted on the ice, and large men holding big clubs beat them unmercifully, or hook them with metal hooks, and then they are skinned--often while still alive--simply for their fur.The mothers of these babies watch helplessly, attempting to intervene, as their babies are killed right in front of them.
Let's stop this senseless, brutal practice.
For those concerned these men will not have a job, may I respectfully remind you that seal-fur makes up less than 1% of total income for these killers. The men who perform these murders are usually fisherman, and can easily make money without engaging in this practice.
I am hoping The Olympic Committee will step up and say that the seal slaughter will not be acceptable anymore, as Canada prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The logo of the Olympic rings that PETA is posting, features the red ring, dripping with blood.

Thank you for helping women, children, companion animals, shelters, the PAWS Program and....and Baby Harp Seals!
Peace, kids.

first- i think it's a great program. one of the tragedies of the fema debacle- aside from human life- was the fact that fema forced families to simply leave their animals behind. many who were to get on the bus with a small animal were told- nope. i cannot imagine.
second- and this dates me a bit :) back in the early 80's, my grade school class made stuffed harp seals to raise awareness of the slaughter. sigh. almost 30 years later- and here we still are. i don't really understand folks who don't see animals as sentient beings with feelings. this is the 21st century- not the 16th.
Betmo--I know. Actually, I understood this fine organization to state in their online newsletter(at PETA.org) that for a while, the slaughter was stopped(there was huge outcry during late 1970's/early 80's)but apparently, it's back-to-business as usual for the past 20-something years.
I for one would like to see a BOYCOTT OF CANADIAN SEAFOOD--it's a vital part of their economy--I called my grocery and said "I won't buy Canadian salmon, seafood, because they allow the baby-seal-slaughter. Several of my friends are boycotting, too." I then politely asked them to tell their suppliers--I think it will eventually get their attention.
Currently, the campaign is to pressure the Olympic Committee to issue a statement against the baby harp seals being slaughtered. We'll see.
Once I heard that if humans for absurd may well leave the earth mostly the sea will know a kind of resurrection !

My daughter just sent me a link and asked me to donate for the local animal humane society. Then I saw this over at Batmo's place. This is a great cause, and Batmo is totally correct about having to separate people from their companions. Not sue I'd get on the bus without my dog when she was alive. I've never got another dog because I never took the idea of an animal as a friend lightly. It's a serious commitment to me.
I'll pass this link on to my daughter and she'll pass it into her circles. Thanks.
Peace.
Lenola--Thanks for your comment; I think you mean we(humans) need to leave, in order for earth/sea to be restored, yes?
I love the photos at your blog!
Spadoman--Thank you for visiting--I just visited your Great Patriot place... Interesting, your military background, AND your tremendous support for peace. Thank you again for forwarding info along!
I'm glad you're publicizing these. We all need to participate in providing protection for those unable to provide that for themselves.
Pris, Hi there. Hope you're well, and thank you again for your support!
Lisa, I think PAWS is a great idea. I sent off a small check.
I have a small menagerie here. 2 dogs, 2 cockatiels, 3 box turtles, and my compadre Wally da Weasel. I can't imagine leaving any of them behind.
I really like your work and have added you to my blogroll.
Here's to all of God's creatures.
Brother Tim--Hi there, thank you. I'm adding you to my blogroll, too!
Peace, bro.
