HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SELMA, OF THE BLOG, "SELMA IN THE CITY"!
It's not often you hear about someone celebrating the birth of someone they've never even met. Unless it's an icon--Marilyn Monroe birthday parties probably happen, and so do celebrations for Presidents, and Royalty and Popes...today, May 10th, a writer named Selma was born.I am saluting her here, because I find myself looking forward--every day--to her words. And when I somehow do not get the chance to read her blog, Selma in the City? I read all the entries later--usually in chronological order, to see what's going on--in her head, and in her life.
Why pay attention to someone I've never met, who lives in Sydney, Australia and writes a blog?
Because I've learned from her. Because she is inquisitive, curious, kind, colorful. Because she cares about so much--her family, politics, her world, the rain hitting the flowers...
Her writings about M., her sis devoted to a man unable to return the devotion, were heartbreaking, and more importantly, TRUTHful... Her writing can illuminate the problems many of us face:
stress in our love lives; frustration over writing tasks/assignments;writer's nerves; dealing with a loved one's substance abuse/mood disorders, etc...
and when she illuminates these facts of life, she does so with a tenderness, a quiet earnestness that has to be read, to be believed.
I'm HAPPY BIRTHDAY-ing SELMA, of SELMA IN THE CITY!
MANY HAPPY RETURNS, WOMAN!
And keep writing, because I need to keep reading you!
